For my birthday this year, Marina and I decided to take a stroll at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta, British Columbia. I’ve heard great things about this wildlife sanctuary and I was excited to finally visit. We got there in the afternoon to walk some of the trails and do some casual bird watching. It was a beautiful area of protected land, and I’d recommend the visit to new or professional birders, families, and nature lovers. At the front desk, you have the option to buy some seed to feed the ducks in marked areas, which is a great option for families with small children.
The trails at the sanctuary were well maintained and took you through the different habitats of the area. For the more professional birders, there are also silent birding areas and bird blinds set up throughout the sanctuary. I’ve seen amazing pictures from my birder and photographer friends who are dedicated enough to wake up before sunrise. Marina and I got to the sanctuary too late to catch the “early birds”, but still managed to see several species of waterfowl, barn swallows, red-wing blackbirds, and a stoic great blue heron.
